What is Pie

A pie is a dessert containing a filling (such as fruit, custard, vegetables, or meat) in a pastry shell or on top of the pastry (or both). The pie is baked until the crust is crisp and the filling is cooked through, then topped with a top crust. Since colonial times, pies have been popular in the United States, and apple pie has become synonymous with traditional American home cooking.

Tarts and pies are similar in appearance and are frequently confused. Short, rather than flaky, pastry is used in tarts, which are typically prepared “blind,” or without filling, and then filled afterward. Flan is a tart that is baked in an open-bottom pan on a baking sheet. Before serving, straight-sided tarts and flans are frequently removed from their pans. Pies are frequently served from the pans since they are prepared in pans with flaring sides.

Pie dough

Pie dough needs to prepare for the pies. It is the main component of the pie. It is made with flour, lard, salt, and a small amount of liquid. There are five types of pie dough. They are,

  • Mealy or short flake pastry
  • Medium flake pastry
  • Long flake pastry
  • Puff pastry
  • Choux paste

Characteristics of a Good Pie

  • The crust is golden brown on the edges and slightly lighter brown on the bottom.
  • Flaky and delicate crust.
  • The filling is firm, silky, and cooked to perfection.
  • The flavor is well-balanced, and the filling is typical of that type of pie.
  • When served, it keeps its form.

The History of Pie

Since the ancient Egyptians, pie has been around. Early Romans made the first pies, maybe after learning about them from the Greeks. The word pie was a common word in the 14th century, according to the Oxford English Dictionary. The Romans must have spread the news about pies throughout Europe. The first pie recipe was for rye-crusted goat cheese and honey pie, which was documented by the Romans.

The majority of the early pies were meat pies. Pyes (pies) were first recorded in England in the eleventh century. Fruit pies (pasties) were most likely invented in the 1500s. Queen Elizabeth, is credited with creating the first cherry pie, according to English folklore.
